Spacer for woodworking vise

Parallel jaws vise for the woodworking workbench

When you have a wood vise such as this one:

Parallel jaws bench vise.

And if you want to clamp a small part only on one side, you stress the slides asymmetrically causing a torsion of the mobile jaw. The part is not hold very tight and this is harmful for the vise itself.

Spacer

Here is a simple remedy to this problem, it is a small spacer to keep on hand, made up of a stack of plywood shims of different thicknesses, pinned on longer dowel. See the photos below:

A few wedges of different thicknesses.

Mobiles around a pin protruding from each side.

Just choose a thickness about the same as the part to be clamped.

The peg keeps the spacer in place even if the vise is opened.
